“My life was chaos,” explains JD, a Groups Recover Together member in Bloomington, Indiana. “There was no structure. There was no discipline. There was no happiness. It was: wake up, get high, and start searching for more money to get high. It was a cycle.”

“I was doing pretty good… and I lost my sister,” reflects Johnna, another members of Groups in Bloomington. “My sister has epilepsy and that’s what killed her. From then on, I just felt like it was my fault. I felt like drugs would help. I was looking for that high from drugs and from liquor. I was looking for money, something to steal so I could make money to get drugs.”

Finding addiction recovery at Groups Recover Together

“I think what really broke [me out of the drug addiction cycle] was that I wanted my daughter back. She was the reason I wanted to do better. One day I decided that was it. It’s going to happen. I stepped in those doors and it’s completely changed my life.”

“After she started going to Groups, she quit needing to get high. Something was satisfied,” explains JD.

Johnna recalls her first experience with Groups: “Everybody in the office wanted to help. They wanted to bring joy to me again.” This experience helped to create new hope for JD, as well.

“She started going and I saw the change it made in her life. So I talked to my probation officer, my house arrest officer at the time, and I pitched him the idea because I’ve never really been successful without help like this. And he gave me the okay,” remembers JD.

Overcoming addiction with Suboxone treatment and group therapy

“Suboxone has helped me feel like I don’t need to use anymore,” explains Johnna. “It makes me feel clear-headed.”

JD expands: “The medicine part of it is great, but it’s not as powerful as all of our experiences helping each other. I’ve seen [group members grow], they’ve seen me grow. They’ve seen me through sickness. They’ve seen me through losing jobs. We’ve all seen it and we’ve all been open and honest. That’s how we’re still sober this long.”

Attending Groups, JD and Johnna saw real change in their lives and point of view. “I started believing in myself,” explains JD. “I had never had that before.” As a result, JD has seen massive growth in his career, actively managing and designing the menu at a local restaurant where he’s able to truly explore his passion.

“It’s my kitchen,” says JD. “That’s all I’ve ever wanted. To walk out of work at the end of the night and know that I touched somebody just through my food. That’s an awesome feeling.”
